The story of a young king who is exiled after losing his throne at the age of 15, and a simple village chief who stands by his side—their unlikely relationship is the main attraction of this historical film. After being dethroned by his uncle, King Danjong (Park Ji-hoon) is exiled to the remote mountain village of Cheongnyeongpo in Yeongwol. He is accompanied by his trusted court lady Mae-hwa (Jeon Mi-do), and in this new environment, the village chief Eom Heung-do (Yoo Hae-jin) takes charge of him.
At first, the villagers are horrified to learn that the exiled man sent to them is actually the former king. On the other hand, Danjong, suffering from the pain of losing his power and loved ones, breaks down and even tries to end his own life. But Eom Heung-do saves him, and gradually the villagers begin to feel compassion for the young king. This unexpected bond between the king and the common people gradually becomes the most emotional part of the story.
Set in a tragic historical chapter of the Joseon Dynasty, the story not only depicts the final days of an exiled king, but also the humanity, loyalty, and courage of the common people who stood by him.
