In 1969, Colonel Kim Jin-pyeong returns from the Vietnam War as a respected hero. He has a strong career, a powerful father-in-law, and a beautiful wife, Sook-jin. Yet his perfect life hides deep emotional pain from the war. His marriage has also become distant, leaving him trapped in a life that feels empty. Things change when Captain Kyung Woo-jin joins his unit with his wife, Jong Ga-heun. The couple moves into a house near Jin-pyeong’s home. From their first meeting, Jin-pyeong becomes deeply drawn to Ga-heun.
Jin-pyeong gets another chance to grow closer to Ga-heun at an army hospital event. When a troubled patient attacks her, Jin-pyeong steps in to protect her. Ga-heun is injured during the incident, but his actions leave a strong impression on her. Soon, their quiet attraction turns into a secret relationship. They meet away from the other officers and slowly reveal their private feelings. Ga-heun also carries complicated feelings about her marriage and family. Their hidden romance becomes harder to control as Jin-pyeong grows more attached. For him, Ga-heun becomes more than a forbidden love.
Ga-heun eventually decides that their affair has to end. Jin-pyeong takes the breakup badly and cannot let her go. He becomes more emotional and starts making reckless choices. At his promotion party, he finally exposes their secret in front of everyone. His actions ruin his reputation and create serious trouble for his career. His father-in-law sends him back to Vietnam soon after. This keeps him away from Ga-heun, but he still hopes she might change her mind. She does not, choosing to stay with the life she already has. Years pass before Ga-heun hears that Jin-pyeong died while serving in Vietnam. She later sees a photograph of the two of them among his belongings. It brings back the memories of their short and complicated relationship.
