Plot
A strange boy changes Soon-yi’s quiet life after her family moves away. In 1965, seventeen-year-old Soon-yi moves to the countryside with her mother and sister. She needs rest after suffering from a serious lung condition. At their new home, the family discovers a wild boy hiding nearby. He cannot speak, read, or behave like an ordinary person. Soon-yi’s mother takes him in and names him Chul-soo. Soon-yi slowly teaches him simple habits using a dog-training book. She shows him how to eat properly, dress himself, and write. Chul-soo learns quickly and becomes especially attached to her.
Soon-yi gets used to having Chul-soo around and starts caring about him. He stays close to her and steps in whenever she is in trouble. Before long, her feelings for him become much deeper. Ji-tae notices their growing bond and becomes increasingly jealous. He sees Chul-soo as someone standing between him and Soon-yi. Chul-soo’s incredible strength also makes the local people nervous. When he becomes angry, they stop seeing him as a harmless boy. Soon-yi later discovers that Chul-soo is not an ordinary human. He was the result of a secret experiment and possesses unusual abilities. As more people become afraid of him, Soon-yi struggles to keep him safe.
Ji-tae’s actions eventually push Chul-soo into a violent confrontation. Soon-yi realizes that staying together could cost Chul-soo his life. To protect him, she leaves the village after promising that she will return. Decades later, an elderly Soon-yi visits the same house with her granddaughter. The old place brings back memories she never truly forgot. Inside the house, she finds Chul-soo still looking almost unchanged. He has waited there for her all these years. Soon-yi spends one final quiet moment with him before leaving again. She decides not to sell the house, keeping the place connected to their past. As her car drives away, Chul-soo watches from a distance.
