Silenced

Kang In-ho comes to Mujin after a difficult period in his life. He gets a job teaching art at a school for deaf children. At first, nothing seems unusual, but the students rarely speak around the staff. In-ho also notices bruises on some of their bodies. He starts watching the teachers more closely and soon feels that something is wrong. His doubts grow when he sees a student being hurt in the dormitory. He takes the child to a hospital and decides to find out what is happening at the school.
In-ho soon learns that the abuse is far worse than he imagined. Several students have suffered physical and sexual abuse from staff members. The school leaders try to keep everything hidden and protect their own positions. In-ho turns to Seo Yu-jin, a human rights worker he met in Mujin. Together, they collect evidence and try to bring the case to the police. Their fight is difficult because powerful people in the town have reasons to protect the school. Even some officials seem more interested in silence than justice.
As In-ho and Yu-jin push the case forward, more people turn against them. The school tries to stop their efforts, while some locals choose to protect the people in power. Still, the two keep working for the children. Their fight finally reaches the courtroom, where the accused face charges for their crimes. Even there, their influence makes the case harder than expected. Silenced is a Korean film inspired by real events at a school for deaf children. It follows In-ho as he tries to expose the abuse and speak up for the students.
